The Beauty Rocks initiative is one of Rob E. Angelino‘s various charity projects. It was started in late 2010 as an effort to fund and support diabetes research efforts. The goal was to offer a way to help raise funds and awareness while participating in a fun, engaging event.
Then, Rob would personally spend time tracking down innovative startup companies that might be in need of assistance. Those that may be onto something new. Something unique. Something groundbreaking. Ultimately, money raised through Beauty Rocks would help support the search for treatments and cures.
Beauty Rocks – A Passion Project
Diabetes is a disease in which your blood glucose levels, also known as blood sugar levels, are too high. It affects the production and/or bodily application of insulin – a hormone that helps the glucose get into your cells to give them energy. Over time, having too much glucose in your blood can cause damage to the kidneys, heart, eyes, nerves, and limbs. It’s now considered a worldwide health problem and has reached epidemic proportions.
In fact, the CDC’s most recent assessment concluded that diabetes affects nearly 35,000,000 people in the United States. In other words, upwards of 10% of the US population suffers from this terrible disorder. Children, teens, and adults are all at risk. And Rob E. Angelino is no exception.
For those not in the know, Rob was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes from a very early age. Later, he was diagnosed with Type 1.5 diabetes. In other words, he had become both insulin resistant and now, had a low-functioning pancreas. Even when maintaining an extremely healthy lifestyle, there was no stopping the progression.
Being of Hispanic heritage, Rob is one of the many people in this demographic who have a high potential for the development of the disease. In fact, he is one of the nearly 15% of Hispanic men who develop diabetes at some point in their lives. He is quite vocal about his fight with diabetes and the lifelong struggles associated with it. With this in mind, it’s no wonder creating Beauty Rocks was an important project for him.
A Search for the Cure
Currently, diabetes research has hit a bit of a roadblock. According to the Diabetes Research Institute, “advancements in new treatments aided by the remarkable developments in computer technology have helped many people better manage the disease.” However, “achieving optimal glucose control remains an unattainable goal for the vast majority of those with diabetes.” Additionally, despite a patient’s best attempts and intentions, “managing diabetes remains a challenging, daily balancing act.”
While there are numerous efforts in the works to find a cure for diabetes, the results are still lacking. That’s where Beauty Rocks and Rob E. Angelino come in. Rob’s dedication to helping to advance efforts to find a cure extends past many of the standard avenues.
He and his organization are on the hunt to find groups investigating new or innovative treatment options. Ones that mainstream medical organizations may not be interested in exploring. Or those that may not have much exposure yet. In fact, that’s how Rob became interested in the growth of stem cell therapy treatments and research opportunities. If stem cells were a way to help treat or cure diabetes, Rob wanted to help researchers find out.
